EPJ Plus Focus Point: Multiscale Modelling and Physics of Biological and Hybrid Organic Systems – Part II: Active, Adaptive and Self-Repairing Systems

Guest Editors: Massimiliano Fraldi, Stefania Palumbo, Martine Ben Amar

This Focus Point on Multiscale Modelling and Physics of Biological and Hybrid Organic Systems – Part II: Active, Adaptive and Self-Repairing Systems is the second in a two-part series of topical collections in EPJ Plus examining substantial progress and emerging research directions in the physics-based modelling of non-equilibrium biological matter and adaptive bioinspired materials.

Following the first edition dedicated to biomaterials and hybrid organic–inorganic platforms, this second edition will focus on active, adaptive and self-repairing systems, addressing the physical mechanisms that enable living matter and bioinspired materials to sense, respond, reorganize and restore functionality. Topics include active mechanics, mechano-chemical feedback, collective dynamics in cellular assemblies and tissues, growth and remodelling processes, damage–repair cycles, nonlinear instabilities and pattern formation in out-of-equilibrium systems, and multiscale modelling strategies bridging microscopic dynamics and macroscopic adaptive behaviour. While emphasis is on the mathematical, physical and computational modelling of these dynamical processes, the guest editors would like to expressly invite methods papers, protocols, reproducible modelling workflows, computational tools and open-source pipelines, together with data reviews and benchmarking resources, and experimental or in vitro studies aimed at quantitatively constraining, validating or benchmarking theoretical models.

Submission to this Focus Point will be opened in September 2026.

Articles should then be submitted via the journal's submission system and clearly identified as intended for the topical issue “Multiscale Modelling and Physics of Biological and Hybrid Organic Systems – Part II: Active, Adaptive and Self-Repairing Systems”.

Detailed author guidelines, including information on paper types, are available in the Submission Guidelines. For manuscript preparation, authors are encouraged to use the journal’s dedicated LaTeX template (preferably in single-column format).

Open Access: EPJ Plus is a hybrid journal offering Open Access publication via the Open Choice programme and a growing number of Open Access Agreements. If the institution of the CORRESPONDING AUTHOR is part of such an agreement, the Open Access fee may be covered by the agreement partner. All agreements are listed with more details under Open Access Agreements. Eligibility will be verified when the corresponding author is requested to complete the relevant affiliation information after acceptance of the paper during the production process. Corresponding authors not affiliated to institutes with Transformative Agreements are redirected to proceed with “Please select your publishing model” and will have to decide between paying the current Open Access fee or choosing the subscription option without any publication charges.
