EPJ E Topical Issue: Branching Dynamics at Mesoscopic Scale

Branching is a commonly observed and complex behavior in nature in mesoscopic scale (1-100 μm). From cell migration to snowflake formation, from Saffman Taylor instability in Hele-Shaw cell to dendritic growth in alloys solidification, branching dynamics and mechanism have been of long-standing fundamental interests in numerical studies of scientific and engineering significance. From a fundamental science point of view, branching dynamics involve rich and essential nonlinear physics and possible universality between branching structures. Despite the long history research of the topic, it still remains as a challenge to fully understand branching dynamics due to the complexity and universality of pattern formation and selection.

In this topical issue of the European Physical Journal E, we aim at providing a significant overview of the topics of branching dynamics at mesoscopic scale. It will focus on the underlying physics of pattern formation and selection from branching dynamics in different fields in mesoscopic scale, such as snowflake like pattern formation, branching structures and structure stability in phase change, branching behaviors of cells and bacteria, Saffman Taylor instability in Hele-Shaw cell, and so on. Questions as to how the branching behavior is related to possible universality between existing branching structures and how branching dynamics responses to internal properties and external conditions will be highlighted.

The themed issue will contain the following topics, but are not limited to:

(1) Common principle dominating the dynamics and development of branching structures;
(2) Snowflake formation and evolution in solid-liquid system and solid-vapor system;
(3) Branching structures formation and their structure stability in phase change;
(4) Formation of self-assembly branching structures in a nonlinear system;
(5) Saffman Taylor instability in Hele-Shaw cell and branching behaviors in multiphase flow system.

Deadline for submission: 31 March 2019.

The issue welcomes contributions of the latest original results in the field, as well as review contributions. Following the standards of EPJE each manuscript will be peer reviewed. Manuscripts should be submitted before 31 March 2019 directly to the EPJE Editorial Office at https://articlestatus.edpsciences.org/is/epje. Submissions should be clearly identified as intended for the topical issue “branching dynamics at mesoscopic scale”.

Papers will be published continuously and will appear (as soon as ready) on the journal website. The online version of the topical issue will contain the papers in the order of publication.
