An EPJ ST topical issue on New perspectives on complex systems will be edited by J. Davidsen (Dept. of Physics & Astronomy, University of Calgary), H. Leung (Dept. of Electrical Engineering, University of Calgary) and H. M. Hastings (Division of Science, Bard College at Simon’s Rock and Dept. of Physics & Astronomy, Hofstra University) and they highly encourage additional contributions by the broader community.
Aim of this topical issue: The aim is to address the interdisciplinary field of complex systems in all its diversity while emphasizing the commonalities across different applications. Prominent examples of complex systems include, but are not limited to turbulent flows, non-linear electronic systems, as well as fault systems, fracture processes and seismicity, the climate system and human heart dynamics, neural signaling or biological signaling processes in general. Due to the technological advances over the last decade, the amount of observations and data available to characterize complex systems and their dynamics has increased substantially. Thus, the main focus will be on novel experimental and data-driven approaches to complex systems that provide the necessary platform to model the behavior of such systems. This includes their description in the language of graphs and networks as well as oscillators, both of which often allow, either separately or combined, a unifying perspective. To summarize, this topical issue will bring together modern achievements from various disciplines including physics, geosciences, engineering, neuroscience, chemistry, and biology to foster synergetic effects between them that will allow us to tackle fundamental issues and challenges in the future.
Deadline for submission: Authors are cordially invited to submit high quality and original research papers that have not appeared in any other journals or proceedings before 15 December 2016.
