EPJ ST Special Issue: Additive Manufacturing for Particle Accelerators

Guest Editors: Chuan Zhang and Michael Mayerhofer

Particle accelerators are essential tools for basic research and also have a wide range of important applications for energy, environment, healthcare, materials, security, etc. However, manufacturing complexity and cost are often limiting factors in developing new-type particle accelerators and increasing their usage. Additive manufacturing, which is revolutionizing our way to design and build things, could provide one promising solution to the dilemma. When additive manufacturing meets particle accelerators, the difficulties of the traditional technologies in manufacturing very complex structures e.g. advanced water-cooling channels can be easily overcome so that not only the construction time and cost of particle accelerators will be reduced considerably but also novel designs for better accelerator performance can be enabled.

This special issue is focusing on the applications of additive manufacturing technologies for R & D of modern particle accelerators and will cover but not be limited to the following topics:

  • Adaptation and optimization of additive manufacturing methods for accelerator physics
  • Novel accelerator concepts through the design freedom allowed by additive manufacturing
  • Additive manufacturing for normal-conducting accelerators
  • Additive manufacturing for superconducting accelerators
  • Additive manufacturing for ion sources
  • Additive manufacturing for magnets
  • Additive manufacturing for storage rings
  • Improvement of surface quality, vacuum performance and heat / electrical conductivity of additively manufactured accelerator components
  • Post-analyses and -processing of additively manufactured accelerator components
  • Powder production and recycling for additive manufacturing

You are heartily welcome to share your successful experience, learned lessons, and sparks of ideas with the whole accelerator community.

Submission deadline: 30 September 2025

Articles should be submitted to the Editorial Office of EPJ ST via the submission system. They should be clearly identified as intended for the special issue "Additive Manufacturing for Particle Accelerators".

More detailed author information including paper types can be found in the Submission Guidelines. For the preparation of the manuscripts a special latex template (preferably single-column layout) is available here.
