The IRAM conference “Multi-line Diagnostics of the Interstellar Medium” took place in Nice (France), from April 4-6, 2022.
Different aspects of the millimeter and submillimeter astronomy were tackled, from the chemical complexity of the interstellar medium in the local and early Universe, to the environment of stars in the earliest stages of formation but also the physical and chemical evolution of galaxies over cosmic time.
This conference enabled discussions on new approaches to fully exploit new astronomical facilities of the (sub)-millimetre domain with a focus on the NOEMA interferometer, with its 12 antennae, and the IRAM 30-meter telescope. NOEMA in particular has now unique capabilities and offers higher sensitivity and spectral coverage than previously available. The technological advances combined with new modelling and analysis methods have changed the nature of research on interstellar matter.
One can now obtain large instantaneous bandwidth but also cover larger areas. This now paves the way for a possible understanding of detailed structure formation, from cosmological scales to the circumstellar environment.
